The Season for Dressing Up and Going Out

nutcrackertrees.jpgAre you taking advantage of the wonderful evening events in your town new urban mom?

After we had kids our evening social life took a serious dive. We’d make the odd feeble attempt to go out on the town but between arranging for baby sitters and me slowly growing out of my slinky evening clothes, “stepping out” became “staying in.”

During the last few years we’ve re-awakened our glamour puss selves and made the effort to dress up for a night out.

During the holidays there are even more wonderful opportunities to make it a dressy family night out. Before you start frowning just think about it…

First there’s the Nutcracker Ballet. Don’t worry about falling asleep…there are outstanding productions out there to be seen and if you haven’t gone out much you’ll be so busy looking at all the new fashions and improvements they’ve made in theatre chairs that you should be able to survive the performance without napping.

I did a quick scan of some of the other neat Holiday activities going on in cities across the country that may give you more ideas.

Chicago, IL: The University of Chicago Chorus will be presenting its annual performance of Handel’s Messiah at 8 p.m. on November 30 at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel.

St. Louis, MO: The St. Louis Ballet will be presenting 17 performances of “The Nutcracker” between Dec. 13 and 23 at the Edison Theater (Washington University).

New York, NY: Everyone’s favorite Charles Dicken’s holiday classic come to the state at the Theatre at St. Michael’s Church in “A Victoria Christmas Carol.” Dec. 1-2.

Lansing, MI: Rumpelstiltskin - this “musical comedy” is being staged at the Riverwalk Theater and will be there now through Dec. 9 (Fridays at 7 p.m).

Boston, MA: “NUTTIER: Not! The Nutcracker” this event is described as the show for those that “can’t stand the thought of watching Clara clobber the Mouse King with her slipper one more time.”…Okay - if this sounds like your kind of “Nutcracker” get tickets for this show from the Tsai Performance Center.

Toronto, Canada: The National Ballet of Canada and Cineplex Entertainment have joined forces to offer a matinee performance of The Nutcracker on Saturday, December 22 that will be beamed to audiences in 69 cinemas across Canada. This version, by James Kudelka, is considered by many to be one of the best. Tickets range from $9.95 for children to $19.95 for adults. Go to cineplex.com for more info.

Austin, TX: Christmas at the Carillon: “A cherished Austin holiday tradition, Christmas at the Carillon is a concert like none other. Since 1994, Craig Hella Johnson has created a unique program each year that is, in equal parts, sacred and secular holiday music, art music and popular music, concert hall performance, and community singing.” The Carillon Gala - Friday, December 7, 2630 Exposition Rd.

Dunedin, FL: The Dunedin Communtiy Chorus’ “Holiday Fantasy,” will take place Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. at Edinburgh Hall in the Dunedin Community Center. The performance includes traditional music with novelty twists, up-beat jazz numbers, and old favorites.

The closest thing to me would be Lansing, Michigan but that’s a bit far to travel for a night on the town…then again I could visit Kelly McCausey while there though :-)

Even as a single person I find that I need to take the time to dress out and do a night out. In a small rural town there aren’t lots of ‘dress up’ places to go but even a casual dress up for a girls night out would be better than the staying in that I’m so comfortable with.

I’ve always wanted to see Nutcracker!

An even better reason for you to go you can see Kelly and have nice dressy night out with a good friend. I say do it Tishia!

Got something to say?
