One of the points made during the discussions I do recall during the conference and in other forums is that people will be more inclined to walk along streets where they feel that they are being "watched" because they feel safer this way. In other words community designers/planners are being directed to create streets where the homes and buildings face the street and are closer to the street. This helps to create that "homey" feeling that you get in attractive towns and small communities. Watchful neighbors definitely make neighborhoods safer. There is a revived area of Lansing that I think would be charming to live in - but as a single woman, I was afraid to seriously consider living there because of the surrounding areas. (I don't like admitting that but I've experienced crime in the city personally and it's hard to shake.) I ended up living on the outer edge of a community outside of the city. I work at home - but it's a 10-20 minute drive for shopping. I would love for restaurants and shopping to be within walking distance. Does safety/crime come up in new urban discussions?
